Mobile phone lovers
I find the piece 'mobile phone lovers' surprisingly accurate as within our modern society everyone is pulled into the social media societies and relationships between younger people especially are judged by their peers over these platforms rather than what is truly in their hearts. The contrasting tones within the piece allow the lovers to be exaggerated against the dark background, the way in which their attention is diverted could be a standing point for how in our modern society we get so distracted from the things that truly matter and we can sometimes neglect to show the ones we care about just how much they make each day better for us. the large amounts of black could be for how we are fumbling around in our lives stuck in the darkness with only small amounts of light to guide our ways but that also means we only see what others want us to see mandating our lives. the way the light fades out lower down the body is I feel, a statement for how as we travel along within our lives we lose part of ourselves but, however we are able to find it in others who can make us feel complete and show us that we are loved and by no one more than them.
The piece was his only piece created without the property owners consent and as a result he spoke to the manager expressing his apologies but also how he would like the piece to remain, which shows his passion for his work and how he wants to help improve the areas that he works within and also improve peoples experiences. This allows the observer to further appreciate the work in more depth as you can observe how the work was created with passion and enjoyment. The thing I most enjoy about this piece and many other of Banksy's work is that no matter what angle you look at these from you see a different layer of meaning, some political and others viewpoints in society.
Follow your dreams-Cancelled (2010)
on the surface this piece appears to have a negative meaning behind it shown through the bold and contrasting word cancelled over follow your dreams, to the fact he has more with him ready to utilise. another of the negative messages given off by this piece could be shown through the man with the signs being elderly, symbolising how the older generations do not like to witness change and are very conservative with their opinions and in some cases have tried to squash the ambitions ad dreams of the younger generations. The solid black for the entire body could be to symbolise the pain he feels doing something like this and cancelling his dreams, his hopes for tomorrow, which isn't as uncommon as we would like within our modern society. This is due to how our governments have put things in place that keep us trapped within the scramble for what little we can during our short lives and never realising our dreams or striving for them.
However this piece could have a positive opinion if you notice that the word cancelled is very small compared to the words follow your dreams, which could symbolise how people can try to stop you living your life and hold you back from your potential. But they cant stop you forever, eventually you will break free and reach your true potential following your dreams. This could also explain the expression on the mans face as he may have reached his dreams but is begrudged to hold others back from theirs, but society is forcing him to subject those younger than himself to hardship and struggle.
