Evaluation

Beginning this final outcome with the intention to create a piece to reflect how my memories of New York have begun to fade with the passing time with the aim to show contrast between light and dark but also the harmonious colours of green and red. Starting on this piece I found that texturing the board and creating the drips took far less time than I had planned for so as a result, I found myself being ahead of where I initially wanted to be meaning that if all remains to time from here I will be utilising more time for refinement of my prep work. I also found adding small fleck of black and white acrylic added motion to the piece and the delicate marks contrasted the very vivid and intensely coloured ink marks.

When it came to creating the drips for for within the outcome after they had dried, I realised how the glue that I had used didn't have the same properties that were essential to them appearing and feeling the way that I had intended. As they were brittle and splintered apart as I tried to take them off the sheet that I had created them on, I believe that this was due to the glue being inelastic and not having enough water within it. As a result I had to create new drips with a different type of glue that is a little thinner and also has the elastic properties required.

Once I had created the elements were considered for where within the composition they would fit and with each also carefully thinking of how the colours would flow within the piece, and also how I should lay out the elements of different materials trying to show how all of the memories happen so fast and can be overwhelming

Once I began assembling my piece I found that for the elements that I was adding towards the end of a long wire required more hot glue and time to set fully into place due to its minimal supporting structure, also they were more likely to fall off and have to be re attached. I also discovered that when adding my drips that I didn't have enough green drips for my preference and it seemed rather red dominant so as a result I created a few more and ensured that the length was long enough to be hanging over the bottom of the piece.



 Overall I feel that the piece has been a success as I felt it portrayed the intentions for this piece in a clear and cohesive way building upon techniques and knowledge gained throughout this project. I felt that using the New York experience as a focal point for my outcome as for me it was the major turning point and inspiring factor within this component driving me towards the progression that I followed with greater enthusiasm that I had prior to this.

Experimenting With Drips

Within this post I will be showing how I experimented with creating drips and how I can incorporate it within my work. All of the drips are created using a pva and ink mix but you could also use acrylic to gain a more opaque colour within the drips. you want these drips to be flexible and vibrant so there must be an elasticity to them allowing them to be warped easily. Also they need to be created onto a plastic base as this allows for them to be peeled away and put onto any surface that you want them to but if the plastic is textured then it will show within the drips, so for smooth drips you want a good pva base with strong colours and a smooth plastic sheet to pour them onto. 

Firstly you mix the pva and ink together inside of a old glue bottle or anything with a ability to squeeze it out of, but if you cat get any of those what I did also works which is to use a soft drinks bottle and drill a hole into the cap, the hole needs to be about a centimetre in diameter.  

Secondly you then squeeze this mix onto your plastic sheet before or whilst the top edge is attached to a wall, then whether you leave it hanging or lye it flat to dry once they have ran down the desired length is entirely up to the creators preference. 

 With this one I created the pattern that i wanted onto the plastic before i put it up onto the wall to begin dripping. I felt that this would allow for the drips to appear more expressive.

 After creating these I began experimenting with using these drips with my photography beginning with just using one colour of drips.

 Before I began experimenting with a multitude of coloured drips which I found added more contrast to the images and it allowed for the form of the drips were emphasised further.

 

 I found where the drips colours bleed and merge draws upon the form of the subject matter within the skylines. I found that the subtle contrasts within the hues allows for the bleed within them to appear more organic and free flowing.

 I also kept some of the drips onto the pockets but I also tried doing the drips onto acetate sheets where I found that the drips flowed more easily and the tones and colours bleed into one another more easily.

 I feel that these drips were an effective way to emphasise focal points within a piece so I think that they would be an effective addition to my textured bases to emphasise the elements over it.

Mock Outcome Progression

Within these outcomes I intended to make 3-dimensional pieces showing influence from my experience in New York. this process begins with texturing the boards with pva and emulsion, as to prepare the boards for the application of ink to add contrast and vibrancy to the piece. 

Following this I create the elements to overlay this base with Hairspray transfers onto cardboard as I liked the effect that I gained when I experimented with this. These are based from the photography that I attained whilst there as well as what I remember seeing.

Also I created some of the photo experiment to work with within these pieces using 3 layers as I felt that they added to the contrast within the piece but I also wanted to vary the colour within this piece in the process so I also used some with only two hues within them.

I then began to assemble them onto wire that I have threaded into boards attaching the elements carefully to attain the maximum effect from each individual element but also to portray them as individual pieces as well as the composition that they are within.

I then began a piece to scale of my final outcome using all the media that I have found effective across the course of experimenting with texture like using the coins to add intense texture.

However within this piece I decided to add drips to the piece to make the presentation on the wall appear more dynamic and to make use of the movement within the ink.on the board. But also to draw your eyes down the piece allowing for the composition to flow more easily.

These pieces were intend to show how my memory of the New York trip has began to fade in my mind mainly due to me having rather poor memory and I wanted to portray this within my work, this is something that I intend to try and show even more vividly within my final outcome. 

For the layout of the piece was inspired by Cornelia Parker's exploding shed as it allowed for all the elements to be shown off as individual elements, but also allows for a new and different appearing piece from each new angle
