New York Experience

On this trip I intend to see at least one of my artists pieces and gather a selection of images showing street art or layering. Also I aim to take photographs that I feel show a interesting perspective or have depth to them.

My photography began at JFK airport following my journey to the hotel at which I was staying for the duration of my trip.

I enjoy how the cars appear blurred showing movement against the skyline, as it gives the image depth and allows you to focus more on the background rather than the foreground.

I liked the way in which the lights in the tunnel blurred as they allowed for me to show the reflection in the glass giving the image another layer and showing depth within it.

I found that even on a coach these building in New York were monumental and I found myself constantly looking upwards amazed by the sheer height around me and how small I must appear to anyone looking down.

The view from the hotel window showed how New York is under constant renovation due to the amount of wear and tear that it goes under constantly, as it isn't called the city that never sleeps for no reason.

The first thing that we did once we had arrived in the city was go to the top of the Empire State building and even as we walked towards it you couldn't avoid gazing up at it and wondering just how did we accomplish this almost 100 years ago.

I find that the blurred light gives another layer to these images and I feel that they would create some nice overlays if I used them within cello tape transfers within collages or compositions to add depth to my work.

I found the view from this height to be both breathtaking and terrifying as I'm not the biggest fan of heights but in a place like this how could I not gaze out at the cityscape.

Being so high up above the city exemplifies how small we are down there buzzing around those streets but also how much we can create like these monoliths to the skies.

I also found that the higher that I got the more difficult it was to get a clear photograph without the lights blurring, however you can still sometimes make out what the forms of the buildings are.

I found the texture of the marble appeared layered like the segmentation of rock faces or cliffs.

The weather for the statue of liberty and Ellis island tour was ideal as there was virtually not a cloud in the sky with sunshine and a light breeze, it allowed for emphasis on the monuments and skylines.

At the point of seeing this I didn't realise what this statue was but later on at the 911 museum I discovered that it was what remains of the statue that used to reside in front of the twin towers.

The skyline from the ferry showed all of downtown Manhattan with building like the new world trade centre and the empire state in the distance.

I found that the clear sky allowed for you to focus more so on the statue allowing for us to further appreciate the form and scale of it all.

when you were stood at the foot of the statue the sheer scale of it hits you and you begin to realise just how small we are in comparison. also i found that with the strong sunlight those who had the novelty hats looked like the statue in their shadows cast onto the stone.

On the walk towards the 911 museum we saw many signs and viewpoints that caught your eye and captivated your attention.

Walking back to the hotel from the world trade centre I saw some rather expressive street art with some powerful messages behind them.

I found that Times Square was a lot smaller than it appears in the movies probably because of the sheer amount of people flooding into the area at all times.

I found that the street art in Brooklyn was a lot more expressive than that i've seen in my local area as Brooklyn is a place of more controversy being so close to the political events of New York.

I particularly like this sign as the mark making within it gives it a large amount contrast with the black base and allows the ice cream cone to appear to have more form to it.

I like how the light blurs appear to be overlaying the skyline as you can still make out the outlines of the buildings and the light lines move above it.

Whilst in the moma I aimed to document the pieces that showed layers, be it colour or form or even mark making that i saw during my visit.

When I got to the MOMA I didnt realise that they had this piece in the gallery but I was overall pleased that I got to see this piece, however I was surprised that the piece was taller than the average person as when I saw it online I didnt feel like it was that quite that big I thought it was about half the size.

I created a piece whilst inside the gallery in a room as it was a task that they were running when we visited and I feel that I created a piece to the best of my ability with what was provided.

I decided to head to Top Of The Rock to get a different and supposedly better view and skyline than Empire state and surprisingly they werent wrong I vastly enjoyed this more so than the Empire state visit, improved by the calmer wind and warmer feel. 

I found the view from the top of the tower to be Vertigo inducing as it is dizzyingly high but it really begins to put things into perspective and shows how small we can really be walking through our lives.

I selected to show this street artist as his work is almost entirely based upon layering up pain and working into it to create deep and enticing pieces.

On this trip i have found one of my artists pieces but it wasn't the one of which that I was expecting as most likely Banksy's pieces have most likely been washed away or painted over. I found this trip was overwhelming in part as we didn't quite realise how massive the city would be and how intense the atmosphere was. However this experience has altered my perspective on the city itself and how I could intemperate my own work and ways in which I could move forward.
