Photo Shoot 11th March

within this session I intend to try and find images that show layers within them or that capture my attention, my intentions with these images could be to incorporate them if not my current studies or potentially use them for observational studies.

 

Out of this session I particularly liked the photographs where I had intense focus on one element with the background around it blurred as it created distance between the elements. I felt that this worked best for the delicate blossom as it emphasised the soft form highly and gave the composition more flow. however from the entire day I found the photograph of the reflection on to the plastic of a phone box to be my most interesting piece. overall I feel that I attained the goal for this session which was to gain a selection of photographs that contain layers, as I feel that I was able to attain a wide range of different effects and types of sources to show this.

Experimenting with texture

Within these experiments I intend to try out a variety of mediums and techniques until I find one of which I find works well with my style of working, before  developing it further potentially towards my final outcome.

I found that hairspray transfers were moderately effective but i found working back into the surface following this gives a more dynamic effect and adds to its appeal.

 I went onto experiment with the effects of mixing acrylic paint, emulsion, ink and glue to acheve a range of effects.

I particularly like this one on the left below as the flicks of red running through it have great clarity to them and the marks draw your eyes upward across the piece. I also like how the blue and the red contrast one another but as well as the contrast of the pale blue and potent red.

 I also tried to use my stencils over the backgrounds and I found that the sign post to be the most effective as the colours appears the most defined and the base seemed more expressive.

 I also began to experiment with using photographs in ways such as cello tape transfers which i felt were able to gain some varying effects.

 From this I began fragmenting photographs onto my experiments to see how they would look, with this first one I eventually began working into the photographs to emulate the way the face had been wore down in places and looked as if the layer had been peeled away.

I felt that working into these helped to emphasise the effect of the piece as it allows the base to bleed back through showing off the contrasting colours within the background.

I also experimented with mono tonal images of varying colours like cyan, magenta and green. I also began  to tear images and overlay the segments  across the same image in another colour, which I felt gave the effect of distortion and the look as if the top layer had been peeled away.

I found that tearing away the images and then re applying them gave the sources a more fragmented or distorted effect.However I felt that working back into them to would give a more effective outcome so I decided to experiment with this next.

This experiment I found to be more effective as I found that the clarity of the black flecks emphasises the wore down marks within the images, I also found that the lack of flat shape along the edges allow the images to be more worn and expressive.

 From my latest experiments onto black board In found these sections to be the most compelling and interesting in my eyes, however of them all I prefer the red piece in the lower left as I find the way in which the red ink has marbled emphasised the colours effect and allowed it to appear more vividly against the textured emulsion.

 I found that experimenting with spray paint on board to be a unusual method but it picks up on the grain of the base that was already applied and the entangled form within the split sections of board.

Finally I began experimenting with using fabrics as well and I feel that it isn't a technique and material that I can utilise effectively and to its up most potential, or enjoyed enough to try and develop more.
